72 Types Of Americans That Are Considered “Potential Terrorists”

72 Types Of Americans That Are Considered “Potential Terrorists” In Official Government Documents

Prison-Camp-450x299 Are you a conservative, a libertarian, a Christian or a gun owner?  Are you opposed to abortion, globalism, Communism, illegal immigration, the United Nations or the New World Order?  Do you believe in conspiracy theories, do you believe that we are living in the “end times” or do you ever visit alternative news websites (such as this one)?  If you answered yes to any of those questions, you are a “potential terrorist” according to official U.S. government documents.  At one time, the term “terrorist” was used very narrowly.  The government applied that label to people like Osama bin Laden and other Islamic jihadists.  But now the Obama administration is removing all references to Islam from terror training materials, and instead the term “terrorist” is being applied to large groups of American citizens.  And if you are a “terrorist”, that means that you have no rights and the government can treat you just like it treats the terrorists that are being held at Guantanamo Bay.  So if you belong to a group of people that is now being referred to as “potential terrorists”, please don’t take it as a joke.  The first step to persecuting any group of people is to demonize them.  And right now large groups of peaceful, law-abiding citizens are being ruthlessly demonized.
Below is a list of 72 types of Americans that are considered to be “extremists” and “potential terrorists” in official U.S. government documents.  To see the original source document for each point, just click on the link.  As you can see, this list covers most of the country…

1. Those that talk about “individual liberties”
2. Those that advocate for states’ rights
3. Those that want “to make the world a better place”
4. “The colonists who sought to free themselves from British rule”
5. Those that are interested in “defeating the Communists”
6. Those that believe “that the interests of one’s own nation areseparate from the interests of other nations or the common interest of all nations”

Obama's Bluff

By George Friedman

Images of multiple dead bodies emerged from Syria last week. It was asserted that poison gas killed the victims, who according to some numbered in the hundreds. Others claimed the photos were faked while others said the rebels were at fault. The dominant view, however, maintains that the al Assad regime carried out the attack.

The United States has so far avoided involvement in Syria's civil war. This is not to say Washington has any love for the al Assad regime. Damascus' close ties to Iran and Russia give the United States reason to be hostile toward Syria, and Washington participated in the campaign to force Syrian troops out of Lebanon. Still, the United States has learned to be concerned not just with unfriendly regimes, but also with what could follow such regimes. Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya have driven home the principle that deposing one regime means living with an imperfect successor. In those cases, changing the regime wound up rapidly entangling the United States in civil wars, the outcomes of which have not been worth the price. In the case of Syria, the insurgents are Sunni Muslims whose best-organized factions have ties to al Qaeda.

Still, as frequently happens, many in the United States and Europe are appalled at the horrors of the civil war, some of whom have called on the United States to do something. The United States has been reluctant to heed these calls. As mentioned, Washington does not have a direct interest in the outcome, since all possible outcomes are bad from its perspective. Moreover, the people who are most emphatic that something be done to stop the killings will be the first to condemn the United States when its starts killing people to stop the killings. People would die in any such intervention, since there are simply no clean ways to end a civil war.

Global Merger Piece by Piece

Global Merger Piece by PieceOn February 12, 2013, the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) hosted a speaker program entitled The G-20: Prospects and Challenges for Global Governance. The program, which was video-recorded and is available for viewing on the CFR website (www.cfr.org), featured a lineup of top-drawer talent from the CFR brain trust. It also yielded a number of revealing statements by the panel participants. But an admission by Eurasia Group President Ian Bremmer is especially noteworthy, in that it once again publicly confirms what critics of the European Union have been saying for decades, but which CFR globalists such as  Bremmer have usually denied. Bremmer admitted — with apparent approval — that “there’s real subversion of sovereignty by the EU.”

The sponsoring organization and the participants in the above-noted event are significant and worth mentioning, as they have been providing key political and intellectual leadership for the ongoing phenomenon of regionalization.

The CFR panel included:

The Absence of a Right in Brazilian Politics

Echoes from Brazil

Manoel Ricardo da Rocha Fiuza
The analysis of the popular manifestations that recently occurred in Brazil, presented in a previous article, inspired a broader research. As a consequence, I updated the data for the select and cultured audience of Tradition in Action, and am presenting this overview with the hope it may help to put into perspective what is happening in Brazil, the sister-nation of the U.S. in South America.

Of the 29 political parties in Brazil, not a single one takes the position of the right. It is a unique situation. All the great democracies of the world have at least one strong conservative party. In Brazil the rhetoric adopted by the political parties has little variation: All adopt a socialist platform, different only in the radicalism of their positions, which range from a moderate Socialism to a full identification with Cuban or Chinese Communism. Expressions such as “social justice,” distribution of wealth” and “equality” are so common that they no longer mean anything. No party is conservative either in name or platform.

It seems opportune to add that in Brazil “leftism” does not just defend an ensemble of social and economic reforms aimed at achieving complete equality among men. It also struggles to implant laws that corrode, corrupt and dissolve the base of Catholic Morals, the foundation of Western Civilization.

The pervasive permissiveness of our days can and must be considered a genuine expression of the mentality and doctrine of the left. Moral permissiveness is as typical of the communist regimes as their totalitarian character in the State and economy.

The Message from a Non-Young Leader to Future Young Leaders

Klaus.cz

Many thanks for the invitation. I take it as a very precious gift to have once again the opportunity to visit your beautiful country and especially Ohrid. I was delighted when my good friend, President Ivanov, asked me to address this special young audience, the future leaders of your country.

I take it as a positive and innovative idea of your President to organize this summer school. Young people should get a chance both to meet and to be confronted with the ideas of older people, of those who have already achieved something in various fields of life. This is how I understand the meaning of this gathering.

It evokes my similar experience when I was about your age. In the dark days of communism, I was privileged to attend a summer school in France, in Annecy, in a town with a similarly beautiful lake surrounded by the Alps. It was almost half a century ago, in August 1965. This school was organized by the American Quakers. There were 35 participants from 26 countries there, some of them from very exotic ones – exotic, and, therefore, extremely interesting. We lived in a world that was much more closed and fragmented than now. I am afraid there remains almost nothing exotic now, in the current, somewhat strangely globalized world.

The decline and fall of the Conservative Party

 Site Logo

The Conservative Party is fighting an uphill battle, as it is rapidly losing members. But in the face of reduced membership rights and lack of privilege, where is the incentive and who is to blame?

When David Cameron became Leader of the Conservative Party in 2005 there were 258,239 members of the Party. By the beginning of 2010 membership had fallen to 177,000. In the three years from 2010 to 2012 membership fell a further 44,000 to 133,000. My own constituency of Beaconsfield has the second highest membership of any Constituency Association in the country. Its membership in 2012 was 1,363. This year by 31st May almost 25% of the members had not renewed their subscription to the Party. On anecdotal evidence this is fairly typical of most Associations. This means that the total Party membership is now approximately 100,000, so we have lost over 150,000 members since David Cameron became the Leader of the Party. The loss of 150,000 is a net loss after taking into account new members joining the Party. Assuming that the Party got say 5,000 new members each year then the loss of members is 190,000.

Why has this happened? What effect will it have and can anything be done to change this disastrous trend?

Obama's secret $8 billion bribe to the Muslim Brotherhood

According to Arabic News Channel TV14 and reported on by Egypt Daily News, Obama’s relationship with recently deposed Muslim Brotherhood President Mohammed Morsi goes far deeper than mere support as a democratically elected President.

Per TV14, Obama conducted secret negotiations with Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood outside of normal diplomatic channels.

According to sources cited by TV14, Obama secretly transferred eight billion dollars to the Muslim Brotherhood—not the Egyptian government—as payment to guarantee that a large portion of the Sinai Peninsula be turned over to the terrorist organization Hamas, an avowed enemy of both the United States and Israel.

The secret agreement was signed by deposed Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi and his second in command, Khairat el Shater.

Who on the U.S. side signed the agreement and where Barack Obama got the eight billion dollars is not clear. When Mohammed Morsi was deposed and arrested by the Egyptian military, evidence of the secret agreement was discovered and seized.

Further, per the news segment, which has been uploaded to YouTube and has since gone viral, secret negotiations between Obama and the Egyptian military—specifically Colonel Abdul al-Sisi, head of the Armed Forces—were ongoing to ensure the agreement remained hidden. Per the secret negotiations, in exchange for Obama recognizing the Egyptian military as legitimate, Colonel al-Sisi promised to keep Obama’s illegal agreement with the Muslim Brotherhood secret. However, a source within the Egyptian military leaked Obama’s nefarious activities to TV14 and the world.

If Obama’s secret agreement with the Muslim Brotherhood is proven correct, it may spell the end for the Obama administration once and for all. Obama may have illegally siphoned off funds from the US Treasury and committed treason by attempting to turn land over to Hamas, a group that is not only an enemy to the United States, but has vowed to destroy every Jew on the face of the earth. If Obama’s nefarious plan would have been realized, Hamas’ control of the Sinai Peninsula would have put Israel in an indefensible position and would have led to a second holocaust.

If proven to be true, this would go far beyond the Constitution’s requirement of High Crimes and Misdemeanors as a basis for impeachment. It would mean treason, possible life in prison, or even the death penalty for Barack Hussein Obama.

The West is deluded about the Middle East – just look at Iran

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_8v_cvxgMx3o/TGlqdzNnxyI/AAAAAAAACDQ/YF1DGcGIyZU/s320/Telegraph-co-uk.JPG

Nowhere is our inability to grasp the realities of Middle-Eastern politics more obvious than in our self-deceiving attitude towards the theocracy in Iran

Hassan Rouhani: the West considers him a 'moderate', but for more than 20 years he has been a key apparatchik of the Iranian regime, serving at the heart of its military, security and intelligence system

Yet again the Western world gazes baffled and powerless at the ever more tragic mess unfolding across the Middle East. The wishful-thinking euphoria that greeted the “Arab Spring” two years ago seems a million miles away as Egypt plunges into bloody chaos; an even greater catastrophe continues to engulf Syria; violence returns to Lebanon with a huge bomb attack on Assad’s Hizbollah allies; thousands die in the sectarian strife that is the West’s legacy to “liberated” Iraq; and yet more “peace talks” brokered by the US between Israel and the Palestinians look more forlorn than ever.

Soros donated Ft 500million to NGOs in 2012

George Soros may have closed the foundation named after him in Hungary in 2007, but the Budapest-born financier donated close to Ft 500 million to Hungarian civil rights groups last year, right-wing weekly Heti Válasz reports.
Describing the recipients as groups opposed to the Prime Minister, the weekly writes that the main beneficiary is the Civil Liberties Union, one of whose members is Péter Juhász, co-president of Together.
Other recipients of Soros aid include the pro-abortion Patent Association, the Mona Foundation, which campaigns for legal protection for women, and the pro-gay Hattér association, all described by Heti Válaszas part of “street opposition” to the cabinet.
For more than 15 years, Hungary Around the Clock has published the premier daily news briefing available for business executives, diplomats, journalists and other decision-makers who need to stay abreast of political, economic and general news about Hungary. The abdication of Europe’s centre-Right

Genuine competition eludes the mainstream European Left and Right because they have too much in common. The ultimate consequences could be explosive

Germany is in the throes of a lifeless election campaign. The Social Democrats have no economic answers for the crisis capable of shoring up their base. Unless its weak ally the Free Democrats fails to enter Parliament, the victory of the Christian Democrats appears assured.
Angela Merkel offers no reforms and places demands only on the citizens in the stricken countries of the Eurozone. Her campaign joins the other issue-less ones in countries like France, Italy and Spain where a lackluster centre-Right has prevailed only due to the glaring inadequacies of Left-wing rivals.
Genuine competition eludes the mainstream European Left and Right because they have too much in common. They have an interlocking set of national interests that they wish to protect at the European level; usually those of corporate interests and powerful producer groups.
They agree on the need to sit out the single currency crisis even as it produces a lost decade for the Eurozone and a lost generation of young people.
A radical overhaul of clearly failing EU institutions lacks decisive backing among the major state players in the Eurozone. No Reformation is likely to spring from the European Left even though, in southern Europe, the bulk of the victims of EU-led deflationary policies are its own supporters.
A large centralised EU, controlling vast funding streams, still commands impressive legitimacy from southern European party elites. It reinforces patron-client networks through transfer funds and secure jobs and electoral security increasingly lacking at home.

-Take the "R" OUT OF COUNTRY AND IT BECOMES A COUNTY!
Weaken the Adversary
Front organizations of Berlin's foreign policy have long since catalogued the Catalans as a separate "ethnic entity," justifying eligibility to special rights.

The Federal Union of European Nationalities (FUEN) speaks of the Catalans in the same breath as not only the Basques but also the Bretons in France or the Scottish and the Welsh in Great Britain.[8] The ethnic subdivision of Europe, as is supported in Germany, lays the foundation not only for demands for autonomy but also for secessionist aspirations, such as are currently escalating in Catalonia.

This ultimately weakens the nation-states competing with Germany for influence in Europe.

The German Ethnic Model (IV)
2009/12/02

BARCELONA/BERLIN
(Own report) - Catalonian secessionists are progressing toward the ethnic dismantlement of Spain with referendums to be held in 161 cities and communities. Scheduled for mid-December, referendums will be held in one-sixth of Catalonia's municipalities on a - non-binding for now - resolution on secession from Spain and the founding an independent country. Secessionists in other parts of the country - the Basque Region and Galicia - are carefully watching what happens. The referendums are providing new impetus to the German strategy of restructuring Europe along ethnic lines. The Federal Republic of Germany provided Catalonian secessionism relevant support over the past few years, most recently, two years ago in the framework of the Frankfurt Book Fair. Berlin's foreign policy front organizations have long since catalogued the Catalan as a "Volksgruppe" (an ethnic entity) justifying eligibility to special rights. Catalan secessionists are being spoken of in the same breath as other ethnic minorities demanding similar autonomous rights, including the Bretons in France and the Welsh in Great Britain.
I'm Catalan
Referendums will be held December 13 in 161 of the 900 Catalan municipalities and communities, to determine whether Catalonia should secede from Spain. The referendum is not yet binding. They exclude the largest regional cities (Barcelona, Lerida and Tarragona). A response is sought to the question: "Are you in favor of the Catalan nation being an independent, democratic and social welfare nation in a European Union of peoples?"[1] The referendum was initiated by an organization calling itself "I'm Catalan. I Love Freedom." The referendum is being flanked by an effective PR campaign, which included the chairman of the secessionist party, Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya recently hoisting the Catalan secessionist flag on the highest mountain peak in the region. The secessionists are also trying to internationalize their cause. They have applied in the European Parliament for concrete steps toward independence and are seeking international observers for the December 13 referendum, particularly observers from the OSCE and the UN.
Disadvantaged
A Spanish Constitutional Court decision relevant to the secessionist plans is expected within the close timeframe of the referendum. Three years ago the regional parliament in Barcelona passed new autonomy statutes, declaring extensive special rights for Catalonia. There is not only controversy about the stipulation of autonomy status, that Catalonia is an independent "nation" and the claim that Catalonia deserves historical privileges. Most controversial is the obligation that all residents of the region learn Catalan. Since some time, this has led, to barricading tendencies. Two years ago, philosopher and regional parliamentarian in Barcelona, Antonio Robles complained to german-foreign-policy.com, that "if one was not fluent in Catalan, (...) it was very difficult to work in the Catalan communication industry" - a massive disadvantage to the citizens from other regions of Spain.[2] If the Constitutional Court rules the regulations in the Autonomy Statutes - which codifies this discriminatory development - unconstitutional, massive protests are expected.
New Borders in Europe
Germany, the EU trail-blazer of ethnic privileges and secession,[3] is no innocent bystander in these developments in Catalonia. Since the late 1980s, the German land Baden Wuerttemberg has maintained a "regional partnership" with Catalonia and two other regions (Lombardy in Italy and the Rhone-Alps region of France). This "regional partnership" brings this northeastern Spanish secessionist region economic advantages, strengthening it in relationship to other regions of Spain.[4] The separatists are politically supported also by the German Green Party. The Greens are members of the same European parliamentary caucus as the "European Free Alliance", which includes several proponents of Catalan secession as well as other separatists.[5] The "European Free Alliance" is not only supporting the secession of Catalonia, for years it has been campaigning with a map with completely new European borders: Spain is divided into seven new countries, Germany has annexed Austria, parts of Switzerland and Northern Italy (South Tyrol). The territory of France is half its current size. According to the map of the friends of the German Greens, the Bretagne, as well as the entire south of the country, the fictive "Occitan" have seceded. The map instigates diverse secessionist movements throughout Europe and is published in full knowledge of the Yugoslav wars of disintegration. German-foreign-policy.com documents excerpts here.
Partner Nations
Germany had created a new impulse for Catalan secessionists at the Frankfurt Book Fair, in the fall of 2007. Usually a country is chosen as "partner nation," to be intensively promoted at the book fair. But this time it chose Catalonia, a region, seeking to become a nation. But not all Catalan writers were to be honored at that book fair, only those, whose works were written in Catalan. Authors using the national Castilian Spanish, were strictly excluded. A map showing a "Catalonia" nation, extending from the Spanish coastline north of Valencia to southern France (Perpignan), incorporating both the Balearic Islands as well as Andorra,[6] was distributed at the book fair. The president of the Balearic regional government announced, also at this book fair, that his Islands would intensify their cultural cooperation with the Catalan region - an agreement providing further impetus toward separatism.[7] These activities take on greater significance through the fact that the German foreign ministry is an official partner of the Frankfurt Book Fair. The main European power's toleration of their activities was an important symbol for the secessionists in Catalonia. (The excerpt of the map is also taken from the map published by the "European Free Alliance.")

Morsi’s gone. What now?

The course of a true revolution never did run smooth. In Russia, when the tsar was deposed in March 1917, the revolution had only begun. It wasn’t until November that the October Revolution saw the Bolsheviks, under Vladimir Lenin, take charge.

The French Revolution may have seemed over in October 1789 when revolutionaries captured the king and forced him back to Paris. Then it “ended” again three years later, when the king was executed. And again in 1793, when Maximilien Robespierre came to power. And then again the next year, when Robespierre was executed. And so on, until Napoleon steadied things for a while. Even in the American Revolution, the final Constitution wasn’t adopted until 1787, several years after the first one proved unsuitable.

So it should be no surprise that Egypt’s path isn’t entirely straightforward. President Mohamed Morsi was arrested on July 3, and the chief justice of Egypt’s constitutional court, Adly Mansour, was sworn in as interim president in the wake of protests larger than those that brought down Hosni Mubarak 2½ years before.

Christopher Story: "The Perestroika Deception"

PART 1

Dispelling Disinformation

by William F. Jasper

This is Part One of an interview by William F. Jasper, Senior Editor of The New American, with Christopher Story, editor of the London-based Soviet Analyst, an intelligence commentary, and editor of The Perestroika Deception by Anatoliy Golitsyn, the Soviet defector and famous author of New Lies for Old. The interview was conducted on August 16 1995 in the Presidio, San Francisco, outside the headquarters of the Gorbachev Foundation/USA.

Q. Why did you start publishing Soviet Analyst, and how does that publication differ from other sources concerned with Soviet Russia, Communism, etc ?

A. Soviet Analyst had been published since 1972 by a group of people in London with long-established connections with the British Foreign Office. Around midsummer 1991, they approached me, knowing that I might be interested in buying the paper, and revealed that they wanted to sell it. Their reasoning was that "it was all over"; the Soviet Union was finished. Interestingly, they thought this well before the "August coup," which took place on August 19, 1991.

"AND INTO THE FIRE" REVEALS NAZI AND FASCIST IDEAS AND INDIVIDUALS IN THE FOUNDATION AND GOVERNANCE OF THE EUROPEAN UNION AND EU COUNTRIES - AND THEIR INFLUENCE TODAY.

TODAY'S PARALLELS WITH PRE- FIRST AND SECOND WORLD WAR EUROPE

CONSTITUTIONAL DESTRUCTION OF NATION STATES, ETHNIC CONFLICT AND ECONOMIC CENTRALISATION MADE WAR UNNECESSARY THIS TIME

THE EURO ZONE'S COLLAPSE IS PERMANENTLY DE-POPULATING SOUTHERN STATES - TO THE ECONOMIC PROFIT AND THE IMPERIAL GAIN OF THE GERMAN CORE.

THE BOOK PUBLISHES THE ALTERNATIVE TO THE DISASTER OF THE EUROPEAN UNION - THE CHARTER OF THE FREE NATIONS OF EUROPE, SUPPORTED BY ACADEMICS FROM ALL OVER EUROPE.

In his new book published today by GMBooks the author, British political economist and former occasional adviser to Ministers Rodney Atkinson, (www.rodneyatkinson.freeuk.com) details the ominous parallels between the Europe of German Nazism and European Fascism (which the Anglo Saxon world believed they had vanquished in 1945) and the design, foundation personnel and structures of the European Union today. He describes the covert and anti democratic methods chosen to destroy the constitutions of democratic nation states and the (entirely predicted) catastrophe of the Euro which daily brings social and economic destruction and economic refugees on a par with wartime.

The Great Deception Continues

The Boiling Frog

One of the main themes of our membership of the European Union is that it has been based on a gargantuan lie. Our entry was a lie, arguments for our continuing membership are generally lies and a referendum campaign for our exit will be shrouded in lies.

The problem with deception though as is widely acknowledged that the only person you end up deceiving is yourself. With this in mind I turn to Norman Tebbit's latest column in the Telegraph. In some quarters he appears to be viewed as a so-called "sound Tory" - for example he's highly critical of Cameron and is seemingly a supporter of Ukip:

How I wish that someone in the No10 circle could understand that there might be a better approach to winning the election than a mud-slinging exercise to expose the real or imaginary personal shortcomings of Mr Farage and just hoping that Labour will passively surrender.
Yet further down the article, in response to comments on his blog, he writes this rather revealing paragraph:
As usual Amos 47 banged on about the Single European Act. As I have explained before, that was designed to make a reality of the single market. Until then any member state could veto any action to open its markets to other members, notably against British exporter of services such as insurance and banking. It also gave us a chance to undo foolish decisions by our predecessors in Government.

Wagner, Siegfried, Marx and the New World Order

by Jeremy James  ~  Ireland, August 7, 2013
This article may seem strange to most Americans, but it illustrates an occult power structure that has reigned among secretive elites for a long time!  Please read the comment at the end of the article. As background information, you may also want to read:
The German Illuminati signal the imminent fall of America by replacing the US Presidents on ‘Mount Rushmore’ with Karl Marx and three Marxist psychopaths – Lenin, Stalin, and Mao.
The Marxist-Masonic cabal who control Europe would seem to be extremely confident that their plan to create a ‘New World Order’ is progressing very nicely.
The annual Wagner season at Bayreuth in Bavaria has just opened with a new production of The Ring. Some of the wealthiest and most influential figures in German business attend this annual event, along with leading financiers, politicians and members of the ancient royal families of Germany and Austria. It is a pilgrimage in the old Teutonic tradition, where the pagan rulers of the Fatherland display their wealth and pedigree, rub shoulders with one another, and worship at the altar of Wotan.
While Wotan may be the father figure in the The Ring cycle, Siegfried is the man of the future, the man of destiny, the great hero whom all have come to study and admire. This contradictory figure, both simple and complex, is the archetypal warrior-in-training for the highest position of all – that of world ruler. He is the Wagnerian prototype of the perfect man who will one day reign supreme over all mankind.
It took Wagner 25 years to finally embody in operatic form the ideal he perceived in Siegfried, the legendary hero of Norse and Germanic mythology. Like Nietzsche, who shared the same ideal of the Superman, Wagner believed he did not yet exist but that he would one day emerge and transform the world. "Siegfried is the man of the future," according to Wagner, "whom we long for but cannot ourselves bring into being, but who must create himself by means of our destruction." Franco-German proposals on "EU Defence"

Dear High Representative,
In today’s changing world, with new centres of power and growing asymmetrical security threats, such as cyber security or terrorism, the European Union is called upon to assume increased responsibility for international peace and security in order to guarantee the safety of its citizens and the promotion of its strategic interests and values.
Recent developments demonstrated the necessity of a sustained and comprehensive EU engagement in regions of particular concern such as the Sahel region, the Horn of Africa or Afghanistan. We also commend your personal involvement in the successful finalisation of an agreement on Kosovo where the EU could eventually take on increased security responsibilities.
Against the backdrop of financial restrictions and a more challenging security environment in the years to come we must carefully examine how taxpayers’ money can best be used to meet our security needs. We must look at innovative ways to use our limited resources to maximum benefit, while further strengthening the European Union and its Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) as a fundamental pillar of the European project.

Did the EU instruct Rome to “unplug” Berlusconi ?

Open Europe blog

If true, this is quite extraordinary.

Fabrizio Goria - business and finance correspondent of the Italian online news site Linkiesta - has recently taken a look back at the Italian crisis towards the end 2011. An English version of the article is available on the LSE's Europe blog. With Italian borrowing costs reaching record highs, he writes that European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso instructed the then Interior Minister Roberto Maroni (of Lega Nord) to "unplug" Silvio Berlusconi, who was the Prime Minister at the time.

Goria writes:

"In those dark days, with the 10-year Bund-BTP spread close to a historical peak, a unique incident occurred. During an institutional meeting, the then minister of internal affairs Roberto Maroni received a phone call. It was towards the end of October. People attending that meeting, a select group of associates, reported that he turned pale. The call came from José Manuel Barroso [who] was very clear with Maroni: “I don’t want you to take this personally. Neither you nor all other members of the government. But you need to “unplug” Berlusconi.” And in that moment Barroso revealed what the strategy was: a flurry of declarations against the then prime minister. From all fronts, from every European policy maker. The message to be sent was one and one only: Berlusconi is inadequate."
Ten days later, Berlusconi resigned.

It was extensively reported at the time that German Chancellor Angela Merkel and then French President Nicolas Sarkozy (who are obviously much more powerful than Barroso) were putting enormous pressure on Berlusconi to take a hike - and it was always assumed that Berlusconi's departure was at least in part due to European pressure.

However, this would be the most explicit intervention known to date. Now, we haven’t seen this reported anywhere else – and given that it is evidence that the EU fell just short of toppling a democratically elected leader – we'd expect it to be all over Italian and international media.

So we take it with a pinch of salt – but, as always, we’re keen to know what our readers think…
